Title: The dynamic host-environment crosstalk at the intestinal barrier shaping our immune responses

Complex interactions between the intestinal epithelial barrier, environment and host immune system are tightly regulated to maintain intestinal homeostasis. Such interactions must maintain the balance between effector immunity against pathogens and unresponsiveness against commensal microorganisms; breakdown in this balance might precipitate the onset of intestinal disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

My research program seeks to define the complex dynamics of host-environment interactions required to sustain intestinal homeostasis, how breakdown in these interactions may lead to intestinal inflammatory disorders, and how we can promote mucosal healing to reverse the intestinal damage caused by inflammation. In particular, I will discuss how environmental factors shape mucosal immune responses and intestinal stem cell function.
